You can picture the fish. It’s the rest of the day you might have questions about.
What should you wear? Is four hours enough? What happens if you’ve never fished for salmon before? And how do you know which trip makes sense for your family?
Those are good questions to ask before you book. At Bair Alaska, our Kasilof trips are guided by Brandon, and we want you to arrive knowing what you’ve signed up for. Here’s where to start.
Start with your dates, not just your favorite salmon
Kings, sockeye and silvers are different trip possibilities, depending on the season and current fishing restrictions. They aren’t interchangeable options available every day.
When you reach out, tell us when you’ll be in Alaska and whether your dates are flexible. If there’s a particular species you’re hoping to fish for, mention that too. We can discuss what fits your visit rather than build your trip around a fishery that may not be available.
Fishing rules can change. Check the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Southcentral fishing regulations and current emergency orders before your trip. Emergency orders take precedence over the published regulations.
Choose a trip length that suits your group
Our guided Kasilof fishing trips offer two options:
Half day: approximately four hours, $250 per person
Full day: approximately eight hours, $300 per person
A shorter trip can be worth considering if you’re fitting fishing into a busy itinerary or aren’t sure everyone wants a full day out. A full day gives you more time to devote to fishing.
More hours don’t guarantee more fish. Think about your group’s interest, comfort and plans for the rest of the day. Confirm the final total, including applicable taxes and fees, when you book.
We take up to four guests per boat. If you have a larger group, tell us your total head count so we can discuss additional boat arrangements and availability. Larger groups won’t all be together in one boat.
Tell us about the people coming with you
You don’t need to know fishing terminology to ask about a trip. Start with the basics: who’s coming, how much fishing they’ve done and what they’re excited about.
For a family trip, include your children’s ages. Let us know about any mobility concerns or other needs before booking so we can discuss whether the trip is a suitable fit.
If you’re new to salmon fishing, say so. If you’ve fished for years but have never visited Alaska, tell us that instead. It helps us understand what you need from the day.
Pack for comfort, not just the photograph
A little preparation makes it easier to enjoy your time outside. A practical starting list is:
Comfortable layers, including a warm layer
A waterproof outer layer
A hat and sunglasses
Sunscreen
Water and snacks or lunch appropriate for your trip length
A small waterproof pouch for your phone and personal belongings
Hip boots and fishing supplies are included with our Kasilof trips. Bring your own water, lunch, rain gear and required fishing license. Licenses, lunch, gratuities, taxes and fees are not included in the advertised trip rate. Keep your personal bag manageable, especially when sharing a boat.
It’s also worth discussing fish processing and getting fish home before your trip. Ask what arrangements are available and what costs are separate rather than assuming those services are included.
Sort out licenses before fishing day
Check which license, stamp or harvest record requirements apply to each person in your group. Requirements can differ by age, residency and the fishery.
For king salmon fishing, a king salmon stamp is generally required unless an exemption applies. Having a stamp doesn’t mean a particular king fishery is open. Use ADF&G’s official licensing guidance alongside the current regulations and emergency orders.
Make sure any license you purchase covers the dates you’ll actually be fishing, and follow ADF&G’s instructions for signing and carrying it.
Confirm the practical details before you head out
Before fishing day, make sure you have:
Your confirmed meeting location and arrival time
Your trip length and group size
A clear understanding of what’s included and what costs extra
The cancellation and weather-related terms
Any instructions specific to your trip
Use the meeting location given with your trip details rather than assuming the business mailing address is where you’ll meet your guide.
Fishing is still fishing. Conditions and catches vary, and no guide can promise a particular fish or a limit. Arriving prepared helps you focus on the experience instead of last-minute questions.
